French Dinner Dress by Mmes Constance & Hermence, Paris, ca. 1888

Parisian Couture: Bronze Ribbed Silk and Floral Contrasts

This two‑piece antique dinner dress, dating to ca. 1888, carries the distinguished French label Mmes Constance & Hermence, 12 Rue Halévy, Paris, près la Rue de la Paix — an address synonymous with high Parisian couture. The gown is crafted from bronze‑coloured ribbed silk, paired with a captivating contrast of red‑flowered ribbed silk on a pink background, a colour combination that feels both daring and harmonious.

Bodice with Stomacher‑Style Insert and Crocheted Buttons

The bodice features a breast insert reminiscent of 18th‑century stomachers, lending the dress a historical elegance. The long sleeves end in pink silk cuffs, while small crocheted decorative buttons fasten the front — one of them missing. This blend of historical reference and late‑19th‑century innovation is characteristic of Parisian couture houses of the 1880s.

Asymmetrical Skirt, Train and Unique Knot Detail

The skirt is asymmetrically cut and finishes in a train, with the front and back joined by a large knot — a highly unusual stylistic element rarely seen in late 19th‑century fashion. Beneath the skirt lies a box‑pleated cotton organdy dust ruffle with lace, adding volume, movement, and structural refinement.

Condition Report: Late‑19th‑Century Textile Preservation

The dress is in very good condition, showing only minor underarm stains, subtle signs of age, and a discoloured hem. It comes from the Valentine Museum, America, and proceeds from its sale support conservation and future acquisitions.
